Abu Simbel is an archaeological site on the western shore of Lake Nasser, about 290 km southwest of Aswan. It is one of the "Nubian Monuments" inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This begins with the direction of the river flow from Abu Simbel to Philae (near Aswan).
The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountains during the reign of King Ramses II in the 13th century BC as a permanent memorial to him and Queen Nefertari.
